WWin BiH League: Zrinjski plays against Velež in a new derby tomorrow

Zrinjski continues the fight for new league points with the fourth derby in a row, facing city rival Velež away.

The series began with a home draw against the reigning champion Borac (1:1), followed by a victory at Grbavica against Željezničar (2:0), and in the previous round, Zrinjski celebrated in the Hercegovina derby against Široki Brijeg (3:0) at home.

Velež’s start to the season has been quite turbulent. Before the preparations began, Dean Klafurić, the coach who led Velež to a third-place finish last season, stepped down. In nine matches so far, the team has seen three different coaches. Damir Čanadi was dismissed after just three matches, where Velež first lost to Inter Escaldes (1:1, 1:5) from Andorra and to Željezničar (1:2). Samir Merzić took over on an interim basis and managed the team against Široki Brijeg (2:0), Radnik (3:4), Igman (1:1), and Sloboda (1:1). In the last two matches against Sloga (0:0) and GOŠK (4:0), Irfan Buz has been at the helm.

Regardless, Velež is approaching tomorrow’s match from eighth place, with nine points from seven matches, seven less than Zrinjski, who has secured sixteen points from one fewer match.

In terms of player minutes, the most playing time this season has gone to players who were with Velež last season: Osman Hadžikić, Klemen Sturm, Dino Halilović, Ante Oreč, Ante Hrkač, and Mihael Mlinarić. Among the summer signings, Adi Mehremić, Milan Jevtović, and Tino Blaž Lauš have seen the most minutes.

The match FK Velež – HŠK Zrinjski will take place tomorrow at the Rođeni Stadium, starting at 20:45.

Referees

For the first time in history, the Mostar derby will be officiated by Miloš Gigović (Gradiška). His assistants will be Moamer Čaušević (A1, Sarajevo), Enes Đozić (A2, Sarajevo), and Darko Gedžić (4, Brčko), while the VAR room will be staffed by Antoni Bandić (Grude) and Amer Macić (Mostar).

Head To Head

In recent history, there have been 48 matches between the two Mostar rivals, with Zrinjski securing thirteen more victories (27-14). The Nobles have been particularly successful in the last five seasons since Velež’s return to the highest rank of Bosnian football in 2019, winning ten out of fifteen matches, while our rival has won only three matches.
